Meet Melanie, 2015 Scholarship Recipient
Melanie is attending the University of Regina, First Nations University of Canada, where she is working toward a degree in Indigenous Studies. Upon completion of her undergrad work, Melanie plans to further her education by taking a 'Legal Studies for Native People' program. Melanie's dreams are to become a successful lawyer practicing in Aboriginal Law and to work with First Nations communities in improving their economic development and consultation strategies. Her ultimate goal is to improve the overall health in First Nations communities.
A proud Mikisew Cree First Nations member, Melanie is deeply involved in, and committed to her community; everything from working with elders and youth in her community to being a guest speaker for Aboriginal Awareness Day. Melanie also serves as co-chair for CEMA's Traditional Knowledge Working Group and is currently the consultation co-ordinator for MCFN government and industry relations. She also enjoys her role as coach for a U6 soccer team.
Congratulations, Melanie. Your passion for continuous improvement through education and community involvement is what makes you a highly-regarded role model for your two young daughters and for all youth from all walks of life.
