In honor of International Women’s Day 2025, we are shining a spotlight on the remarkable team members leading the way in the forest and manufacturing sectors at Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac). Their diverse roles and career paths highlight the essential contributions made to our industry every day.
Taylor Franchuk – Sales at Al-Pac
Taylor Franchuk has been an Al-Pac team member for 3.5 years and currently works on the Sales team. Her journey began with a degree in Natural Resources, Energy, and the Environment from the University of Alberta and provided her with a strong foundation in economics, stakeholder management, and business.
Taylor’s career has spanned various roles in logistics, sales and recruitment, each providing valuable insight into industry operations. Since joining Al-Pac, she has transitioned from recruitment to sales, where she applies her knowledge to support business growth and customer relations. “My career path has given me a well-rounded understanding of the industry’s challenges and opportunities. Every role I’ve taken has contributed to my ability to problem-solve, collaborate and make an impact,” Taylor shares. “I’m excited to continue building on this foundation as I pursue a long-term career in the forest and manufacturing sectors.”
She emphasizes the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. “Career progression isn’t always a straight ladder—sometimes, lateral moves help build a broader understanding of the business” she explains.
For those considering a career in the forestry sector, Taylor’s advice is simple: “Do it! The forestry sector is highly sustainable and plays a crucial role in managing natural resources. It offers unique challenges and opportunities to contribute to something bigger than yourself.”
Hayley Mickelsen – Health, Safety & Security Trainer
Hayley Mickelson began her career as a Primary Care Paramedic in Edmonton, spending nine years in emergency medical services before transitioning to Al-Pac. Her experience responding to industrial incidents sparked a passion for workplace safety and prevention.
She first joined Al-Pac as a casual Health, Safety & Security Technician, which became her formal introduction to the forest and manufacturing sector. Now, as a Health, Safety & Security Trainer, she is dedicated to ensuring our team members are equipped with the training and resources needed to work safely. “I have always been passionate about helping people, whether it’s responding to someone in distress or training others, so they feel confident, competent and comfortable with their job,” Hayley stated.
She believes that every career path is unique and that continuous learning is essential. “If you feel like you know every single aspect of your job, it’s time to find a new career. Learn from everyone you can, from every situation and every mistake,” she advises.
For those considering a career in the forest or manufacturing sector, Hayley encourages hands-on experience. “Come for a tour, ask questions and immerse yourself in a learning environment. There are so many different employment opportunities – you don’t have to pick a specific path right away. Explore your options and find a role that brings joy to your day.”
Sheri Bencharsky – Specialist, Customer Service & SAP Production Planning, Environment & Technical
Sheri began her career at Al-Pac right out of college with a diploma in Animal Health Technology. Although she had no prior experience in forestry or pulp, she was eager to learn and embraced the opportunity to explore something new. “I enjoyed working on the main lab team as our team is exposed to all parts of the mill, and through our rotations, we get to work with all departments and test everything from the chips to the final pulp,” Sheri shares. Her passion for learning and adaptability allowed her to excel in her role, gaining valuable insight into the industry.
Recently, Sheri transitioned into a new role as a Specialist in Customer Service & SAP Production Planning for Al-Pac’s Environment & Technical division, where she faces fresh challenges daily. She enjoys applying her experience and knowledge from the lab to assist customers with their questions and concerns. “I enjoy new challenges every day and using my experience to support our customers,” she reflects. Sheri’s journey demonstrates the importance of adaptability and continuous learning to help build a fulfilling career in the forestry and manufacturing industry.
It’s through contributions of women like Taylor, Sheri and Hayley that we can continue to shape the future of Al-Pac and the forest and manufacturing sector. Their expertise, leadership and passion demonstrate the many diverse opportunities available and inspire the next generation to explore a career in our industry.
