  • Director, Indigenous Relations

    Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a dynamic people leader for the role of Director, Indigenous Relations to work out of our mill site near Athabasca, Alberta. This role requires regular travel to our St. Albert office and within our forest management area, that covers most of northeastern Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading Al-Pac’s Indigenous Relations team to develop and implement the company’s Indigenous Relations Strategy. This role is central to building and maintaining respectful, long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities, governments, and organizations across Northern Alberta. It ensures these important relationships align with Al-Pac’s commitments to environmental stewardship, community engagement and overall strategic goals. Key responsibilities include building working relationships, leading and guiding community engagement and consultation initiatives, providing expert advice to senior leadership on Indigenous relations matters, and promoting cultural awareness across the organization.

    Role Responsibilities

    • Lead the development and sustainment of the Indigenous Relations strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and community engagement commitments.
    • Build and maintain relationships with Indigenous communities, governments, and organizations across Northern Alberta.
    • Promote cultural awareness within the organization through training, dialogue, and leadership and team member engagement.
    • Advise senior leadership and Al-Pac’s board of directors on Indigenous relations matters.
    • Lead and foster collaboration across all levels of the organization to ensure that Al-Pac’s Indigenous Relations Strategy is well understood and incorporated into departmental business planning, project planning and operations.
    • Lead and guide Indigenous community engagement initiatives in alignment with Al-Pac’s Indigenous Relations Strategy.
    • Guide consultation initiatives, including regulatory consultation activities.
    • Support enterprise certification initiatives, including managing Al-Pac’s Partnership Accreditation in Indigenous Relations certification.
    • Represent the company in external forums, including industry associations, multi-stakeholder groups and government consultations.

    Role Requirements

    • Preferred post-secondary degree in Indigenous Studies, Business, Social Sciences or a related field.
    • Minimum 10 years of experience in Indigenous relations, stakeholder engagement, or community development.
    • Proven track record of building strong relationships with Indigenous communities, governments and organizations.
    • Strong understanding of Indigenous history, cultures, governance structures, and legal frameworks in Canada.
    • Demonstrated experience in consultation with Indigenous communities on major project development within the forestry, manufacturing, or industrial industries is an asset.

    • Deep understanding of Indigenous governance structures, cultures and histories.
    • Strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation skills.
    • Excellent communication and relationship management abilities.
    • Strategic thinking and ability to align long-term vision with operational execution.
    • Knowledge of co-operative models and community development practices.

    • Comfortable with regular travel and working outside of regular business hours.

  • Millwright Apprentice – Indigenous Apprenticeship

    Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries Inc. (Al-Pac) is seeking a Millwright Apprentice – Indigenous Apprenticeship to work out of our millsite near Athabasca, Alberta. The successful candidate will be responsible for working alongside a Journeyperson and acquiring the necessary skills and technical training to become a competent Journeyperson. The role involves performing a wide range of mechanical work, installation and maintenance of operating equipment and assembly of machines or components. The role will work from detailed jobs procedures, manufacturer specifications, blueprints diagrams, engineering drawings and equipment specifications.

    Al-Pac’s Indigenous Apprenticeship Program covers technical training costs and contributes towards books, supplies, and mileage to attend training.

    Role Responsibilities 

    • Locate sources of problems by observing mechanical devices in operation and listening for problems, using precision measuring and testing instruments.
    • Determine changes in dimensional requirements of parts by inspecting used parts, utilizing calipers, micrometers and other measuring tools.
    • Troubleshoot complex machines and systems, adjusting processes to optimize quality and productivity while generating solutions to complex inefficiencies and issues.
    • Assemble, install, test, and maintain equipment, appliances, apparatus, and components, using hand tools and power tools.
    • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
    • Inspect systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair and to ensure compliance and reliability.
    • Ensure all mandatory safety documentation is completed, hazard assessments are preformed including all required learning sign offs. Work always following safety protocols and workspace clear and hazards are controlled.
    • Document details of all work completed and entering work request for any follow up work

    Role Requirements

    • Preference will be given to Indigenous candidates who reside in or near Al-Pac’s Forest Management Agreement (FMA) area.
    • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED and currently registered or planning to register in a millwright trade program.
    • Successfully complete any required program entrance exams and mechanical aptitude testing
    • Valid driver’s license (GDL removed) with an acceptable driving history.
    • Ability to prioritize, manage time well, multitask and troubleshoot.
    • The ability to read and understand complex instructions.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Ability to work under pressure, changing priorities, deadlines, and adapt to change.
    • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access) an asset.

    Other

    • Working conditions include indoors (high temperature) and outdoors (sub-zero temperatures) and physically demanding tasks that often require climbing and lifting or moving heavy items.
    • The job may involve standing for long periods.
    • There is some risk of injury when working with power tools and heavy equipment.
    • Must be able to operate overhead cranes and mobile equipment.
