Poplar Farming
Poplar farming represents the intensive management component of Al-Pac's triad approach to sustainable forest management. The company is partnering with private landowners outside the FMA area to develop a network of poplar farms.

Al-Pac is entering into 20-year leases to grow hybrid poplar trees on farmland within 200 km of the millsite. The long-term goal is to lease and plant an average of 1,200 hectares (2,965 acres) each year for a total of 25,000 ha (61,776 acres) to help ensure a sustainable fiber source for the mill.

The hybrid poplars planted in Al-Pac's tree farm program are similar to the trees that have been used as shelterbelts in the region for more than 50 years. These poplar trees can grow six-to-eight times faster than native aspen, and have root systems that are more easily removed for reclamation.

Local landowners participating in the poplar farm program receive a secure, long-term income with minimal risks and no output costs.  Many landowners also appreciate the intangible benefits such as improved aesthetics, increased wildlife presence and recreational opportunities.
